"Luck is blind, but misfortune has perfect eyesight."— Totò

If you've ever visited Naples, wandered the streets of Venice, or spent a dreamy holiday somewhere in Italy, chances are you’ve seen one: dangling from a backpack, hanging from a car mirror, or around the neck of a charming local.

You may not have realized it, but someone you met on your trip probably had one tucked safely in their pocket like a tiny treasure.

What are we talking about?

The Italian Lucky Cornicello, of course.

For many Italians, the red cornetto isn’t just a charm — it’s a little shield against bad luck, a symbol of affection (usually gifted by a loving nonna), and a piece of popular tradition that smells like home, good food, and just a touch of superstition.

Five signs you need a lucky cornicello in your life

1. Because Nonna always said so

"Cornetto in your pocket and the evil eye stays away!"

devil Even Ronnie James Dio’s rockin’ grandma used to say that (and she’s the one who taught him the devil  hand sign gesture!).

And let’s face it — if you can’t trust Nonna, who can you trust? She knows everything: from cold remedies to chasing off bad energy. Best not to argue.

2. Because it brings Italian good luck... even in the kitchen

Keep it near the stove and your pasta will never overcook again — it’s basically science!

Perfect for avoiding culinary disasters and overly salty soups.

Legend has it, one Italian grandmother once found her grandson had overcooked the pasta.

As punishment, she made him shell a kilo of fresh peas while his Milanese cousin stood nearby claiming that cream in carbonara is “not that bad.”

Needless to say, they both had their Italian passports temporarily revoked and Malocchio (the Italian Evil Eye) starting look at them!

❤️ 3. Because love may be blind… but the cornetto sees everything

A little extra luck in love never hurts — especially when your crush doesn’t even know you exist.

Yes, the horn necklace has romantic powers too! It’s red like Italian passion (and wine).

4. Because it protects better than your neighbor’s Wi-Fi

Bad days, grumpy coworkers, awkward family dinners with pessimistic relatives who should’ve had a work meeting that day — the cornetto’s got your back.

It’s a tiny anti-jinx shield, battle-tested by at least three generations of Italian superstition experts. (Ask your grandma what her grandma used to say.)

5. Because it’s the perfect gift

No sizes, no expiration date, and no one ever has too many.

It’s handmade, Italian, and says “I care about you” without needing a speech.

It’s always welcome — and whoever receives it will thank you forever.

Stories from the Workshop

One sunny winter morning, on the Rialto Bridge, Mrs. Teresa walked into the shop with a red coral cornetto inherited from her grandmother. “I haven’t worn it in years,” she said, “but my grandson is leaving for New York for something important. I’d like to entrust him with something that carries the scent of Italy.” The pendant was authentic, with an old, well-lived setting: more history than shine, more love than show—just like certain memories that never go out of style.

Mamma Gabriella examined it under the loupe, just as she taught us to do since we were children: the coral’s striations, the hallmark, the small signs of wear. Alessio reinforced the bail and adjusted the clasp; I chose a new cord and a light gold mounting, respectful of the original—elegant, never gaudy. No special effects: just Venetian craftsmanship and family care. Before handing it over, we explained the reason for red: protection, energy, the Mediterranean Sea. The cornetto doesn’t “work miracles”; it reminds the wearer to carry a thread of home, to carry that quintessential Italian good humor.

In the afternoon Teresa returned with her grandson. She taught him the little ritual: “Touch your palm with the cornetto before you leave, and give thanks—always—when you arrive.” As they stepped outside, a gust of wind sent the boy’s cap flying; a gondolier caught it mid-air to the laughter of passers-by. “See?” Teresa said. “Good fortune begins with a smile.” That, too, is a good-luck charm: an attitude of the heart as much as an amulet.

A few months later a postcard arrived (emails were still a rarity): the grandson had passed the exam he feared. “I don’t know if it was the cornetto,” he wrote, “but it made me feel protected and at home.” That’s why almost every Italian has a cornetto charm: because it’s a gesture that binds generations, a reminder of confidence when setting out and gratitude upon returning. The ancients would have marked the moment with "Ad maiora ...", expecting the reply "Semper!"—because wishing others well is a beautiful habit.

At Eredi Jovon we often say: the finest jewels don’t promise magic—they tell stories. And in telling them, they remind us who we are.

So Why you Should wear a Cornicello?

The lucky cornetto may be small… but it’s got the soul of a classic.

Whether you’re a true believer or just like a bit of “just-in-case” protection, carrying one brings a smile, a little peace of mind, and a touch of Italy wherever you go.
