Laocoön Hand Carved Cameo -
Superb italian jewellery cameo made in sardonic shell and set in 375% gold. Finely hand carved, it portrays Laocoön and his sons. This cameo is freely inspired from an antique roman scolpture actually in the Vatican Museums of Rome.The group was unearthed in 1506; informed of the fact, Pope Julius II, an enthusiastic classicist, sent Michelangelo to the site of the unearthing of the statue immediately after its discovery. Michelangelo was very impressed by Laocoon and the influence of this opera can be seen in most of his scolptures.
